We would love to welcome you to this special place
Glengyle Farm, home to the Sephton family since 1867, is nestled in a glorious valley in the spectacular Southern Drakensberg in the Wartrail farming area in the district of Barkly East, a small town in the Eastern Cape highlands (between Lady Grey and Elliott).
Scenically beautiful with its green valleys and sparkling mountain streams surrounded by the high rugged peaks of the Witteberg mountains (some of the highest in the country), snow is almost guaranteed in winter. The area offers excellent trout fishing; 4 x 4 trails over high mountain passes and challenging river crossings and adventure sports such as the increasingly popular SkyRun held in November and the Wartrail Tri-Challenge in February (www.pureadventures.co.za ). There are also some fine examples of San Art in the surrounding caves, wonderful wildflowers, bird life including the Grey Wing Franklin, Cape and Bearded vulture colonies and even the shy Rhebok may be spotted from time to time.
Glengyle is some 38 kms from Barkly East on a gravel road which is reasonably well maintained however more suited to vehicles with high clearance, especially in wet and snowy conditions.
The Green Mountains by Jessie Belle
Glengyle is a working farm and has two large houses, furnished and equipped comfortably for self-catering guest stays and is an idyllic spot for biking, hiking or simply relaxing under the clearest blue skies.
The farm has demarcated hiking trails for guests wanting to explore, and the rivers, caves and sandstone rock formations offer endless hours of entertainment for the whole family in the summer months. The farm and the Wartail area offer great fly fishing spots and horse riding can be arranged.
Given the farm’s distance from the closest town, we do recommend that guests plan meals and provision well for their stay! And, warm clothes are essential, as even in summer the evenings can be extremely cold.
